The Farmhouse Soerries-Schulte is 200 years old

However, the farm Sörries Schulte, today known as Schumacher, has been a traditional farming concern for over 1000 years.

Timber-frame house in four upright support post construction: two support posts situated to left and right of the main hall entrance – and two further posts placed in the same manner at the outer walls.
D-59649 Ense-Niederense situated at what is today known as Bahnhofstrasse 48, was rebuilt and completed on the 10th August 1808 by Johann Theodor Schulte and his wife Anna Maria, nee Nölle, (known as widowed Kloith - Schulte) to replace their former property, which stood at a different location and which had been destroyed by fire.
Inscription on the beam above the main entrance door: What burnt is lost: I chose you my god: give me your gentle hand – to lead me back to my beginning. Johann Theodor Schulte and Anna Maria Nölle, married, rebuilt this house Anno 1808, 10th August.
Records show that the farming concern, known as “Schultenhof” has a history dating back to the 9th Century, i.e. to the time of the Carolinger period. The family could have celebrated the farm’s 1000-year anniversary in 1970, but the owner, father and grandfather Heinrich Sörries, born in 1892, died during that year. His successor was his son Johannes (*1925), who in 1958 married Elisabeth Franzen (*1934) from Marl.

Heinrich Sörries Schulte (*1892), farmer and animal breeder by profession, converted the old dairy into a modern launderette and from 1954 to 1967 held the position of Committee Chairman for the launderette and the company known as “Reinigungs eGmbH”. This business still exists in its original location and is known as Wäscherei Baader GmbH, Bahnhofstrasse 51.
The farmhouse, erected in 1808, is a timber-framed building in four post construction: the entrance is flanked on either side by two upright support posts situated parallel to the crest of the roof, and two further support posts placed in the same manner at the outer walls. In this type of design, which is typical to Westphalia, the main entrance door

was always built into the gable end, which was not exposed to adverse weather conditions. It was large enough to permit a cart, drawn by two horses and laden with corn, to be pulled into the entrance door and on to the wooden entrance hall floor (solid floor).
At that time the main entrance hall was the nucleus where all events took place, whether annual events or life in general. This was where the corn was thrashed, celebrations took place such as weddings, baptisms, birthdays or after funerals even the funeral parties (funeral buffets, mourning bread or condolence drinks) were served here. This is where nowadays, the present owner Franz Schumacher (born in Brüderich) and his wife Maria (nee Sörries Schulte) (∞1983), sell their her farming produce, such as new potatoes and other seasonal products
The family name Sörries was first brought to Niederense and into the Farmhouse Schulte by marriage, when Johann Mathias Sörries (*07.05.1782) from Blumenthal married the daughter of the house, Anna-Christina Kloith, known as Schulte on the 13 October 1810. (* 28.01.1791 - † 24.02.1790)
The farmer and house builder Johann Theodor Schulte (*25.04.1761 - † 1809?) married twice. His first marriage (∞ 20.04.1790) was to Waltraut Elisabeth Ahshoff and his second marriage (∞ 25.07.1797) to Anna Maria Nölle, widowed Kloith, known as Schulte.

Hyphenated names, made up of the name of the farmhouse and the licensee’s family name, have a long tradition – dating back to the Roman times. This is linked to the procedure applied by landowners (the State, Monasteries etc.) during the middle-ages when drawing up leasing contracts. Leasing contracts usually ran for 12 years and were always tied to the farm and not to the licensee. This was to prevent the contract to end should the licensee die whilst the contract was still valid. Beneficiaries or legal successors in our area had to be newly appointed as licensees by the Kurkölnische Oberkellerei Arnsberg and the Licensee was responsible for any “outstanding debts” or charges. Licensees (Coloni) managed a farm in accordance with the law prevailing in the Middle Ages for a self-supporting business concern. This consisted of three elements: firstly the house, farm and garden, secondly agricultural (farming) land, and thirdly the right to use facilities provided under the lease (usually in part Council/Parish property): such as meadow/grazing land, woodland and waterways). It was not until the end of the 18th century that farmers could buy their freedom and to become actual owners of the property.
